By Mike Larkin. She has been a feature on the show since the very beginning. But following the death of Marcia Wallace, bosses at The Simpsons have decided to kill off her character Mrs Krabappel. However it will be a while yet before Bart Simpson's primary school teacher disappears from screens, as the veteran actress and comedienne recorded enough episodes to last another year. The show's executive producer Al Jean told TMZ there was no one who could take her place on the show as her character Edna, who in recent years overcame her perennial loneliness by becoming the second wife of the Simpson family's neighbour Ned Flanders. However there will be plenty of time for the show's writers to plot a suitably emotional exit for the beloved character, as they already have a year's worth of episodes in the can. The Fox series is produced far in advance, meaning the programme is never in danger of going off the air due to production problems. Irreplaceable: The show's executive producer Al Jean says no one could take the place of Marcia Wallace. There had previously been speculation her character was going to be killed off anyway as part of a show shake-up, but Al was quick to step in and squash the rumours.

The year old voice artist and comedian had succumb to breast cancer last year, but in an unexpected epilogue in Sunday's brand new episode, fans were left emotionally moved by a small, but sentimental tribute to Bart's schoolteacher. In a brief scene at the very end, and before the closing credits, Mrs Krabappel and her husband, Ned Flanders, are dancing a passionate tango together and then we see him mourning at home, alone wearing a black armband.

She is best known for her roles as receptionist Carol Kester on the s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show and as the voice of elementary school teacher Edna Krabappel on the animated series The Simpsons , for which she won an Emmy in The character was retired after her death. Wallace was known for her tall frame, red hair, and distinctive laugh. She had a career spanning five decades on TV, film, and stage. She was a frequent guest on The Merv Griffin Show , which led to her receiving a personal request to appear on The Bob Newhart Show in a role created especially for her.
